What can be done about organisations suffering from injelititis? Parkinson thought that the only solution was for really able people to pretend to be incompetent on their way to the top, and only reveal their dynamism once they had got there. More recently, management theorists have argued that breaking up businesses into much smaller independent units can give them a new lease of life. Giving managers the incentives to perform outstandingly, so the thinking goes, will galvanise them into action.
